As\u00ed, por m\u00e1s que la puesta en escena y la iluminaci\u00f3n fueran grandiosas, los espect\u00e1culos (freak shows) de P. T. Barnum ten\u00edan un p\u00fablico de educaci\u00f3n precaria y niveles altos de alcohol en sangre. Por contraposici\u00f3n, muchas veces encontramos a fan\u00e1ticos del jazz de lo m\u00e1s elitescos api\u00f1\u00e1ndose en un tugurio de mala muerte, expuestos a hedores y sabores vergonzantes en mesas min\u00fasculas atendidas por meseros carentes de toda cortes\u00eda, nada m\u00e1s porque all\u00ed se escucha \u00abel mejor jazz de la ciudad\u00bb.<\/p>\n<p>Desde los medios (o lo que solemos llamar \u00abla opini\u00f3n p\u00fablica\u00bb), en general se favorece a estos \u00faltimos shows mientras que a los primeros se los comenta displicentemente, tach\u00e1ndolos de pasatistas y huecos, opini\u00f3n que muchas veces comparto.<\/p>\n<p>Podemos hacer lo mismo con otros conceptos? Lean unos p\u00e1rrafos que me rob\u00e9 del New York Times hoy:<\/p>\n<p>Censorship in the Science Museums<\/p>\n<p>Published: March 28, 2005<\/p>\n<p>Big-screen Imax theaters typically offer lavish visual spectacles with bland and uplifting scripts. Their films are seldom the stuff of controversy. So it was a bit of a shock to learn, from an article by Cornelia Dean in The Times on March 19, that a dozen or so Imax theaters, mostly in the South, have been shying away from science documentaries that might offend Christian fundamentalists. Worse yet, some of those theaters are located in science centers or museums, the supposed expositors of scientific truth for public education.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the documentaries whose distribution has been affected by religious controversy include \u00abCosmic Voyage,\u00bb a journey through the far-flung universe, and \u00abGal\u00e1pagos,\u00bb about the islands where Charles Darwin made observations that played a crucial role in his theory of evolution. \u00abVolcanoes of the Deep Sea,\u00bb depicting the bizarre creatures that flourish near hot, sulfurous vents in the ocean floor, is the current focus of controversy. It was vetted for accuracy by a panel of scientists and was sponsored in part by the National Science Foundation, a government funding agency, and Rutgers University.
